This is what happens when a) Michael Sullivan hasn't sent out the second half of his book and you're finished with the first half; b) you've been staring at someone else's writing so much you have an uncontrollable itch to put words of your own together; c) you stare too long at a comic book panel of Bucky in stasis;  d) you wonder what Bucky would think if he saw himself like this; and e) you spent way too much time on Pixlr trying to make a comic book panel look like a old photo.

Steve & Bucky ficlet... little bit o'angst but not too much... )

Included in this review of Do Not Go Gentle are instructions on how to properly use an oven and a list of this reader's favorite baked goods:

"X-D This was the best thing ever. Yes, you have a fan. Please write more! X-D I love Mr. Kelly! And tell Steve he should be okay as long as he bakes it at 375 for an hour and thirty minutes, 350 if his oven is a convection one. But if it's a new, energy-conserving convection oven, set it at 375 with convection on or it will never get done (I still haven't figured out our new oven. The one I'm used to was from the eighties. But then the eighties called and demanded their oven back, leaving me stuck with an Energy Star monstrosity that I can not understand at all.) Or use the roasts setting. He could do that...
I also love oatmeal raisin cookies, snickerdoodles, gingerbread, and peanut butter cookies when they're hot. ;-P"

Oh Marvel fandom, you're so adorable.

[livejournal.com profile] just_ann_now requested I put together a master fic list for my favorite Bucky Barnes and Steve Rogers fics, and I've started on it. I'll be splitting into AO3 and a FF.net, because there's terrific non-slash, brotp fics at both sites. For now, it's just the AO3 ones, because I'm out of time. You can read it here, or click on the link to my tumblr post.

Brotp Bucky & Steve Gen Fic Master List, Pt 1 - AO3 Faves

The Space At the End of His Fingers by Owlet. He has been merely an arrow aimed at the heart of HYDRA, so it’s not hard to decide to go down with the plane.

This, You Protect by Owlet. The mission resets abruptly, from objective: kill to objective: protect. Pt 1 of Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail.

Team-Building Exercises by Owlet. Integration into adult human social dynamics requires attention and effort. Especially with this bunch of damaged bozos.(A series of interconnected one-shots.) Pt 2 of Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail.

Miracle on Park Avenue by Owlet. Should’ve stayed indoors, Barnes. That’s where the photographers aren’t.

Wing and a Prayer by Sholio. Bucky and Sam fall out of a HYDRA plane into the Canadian wilderness. Nothing like a hundred-mile walk to civilization while severely injured and being hunted by HYDRA, right?

These Things That I’ve Done by Goody. When the Howling Commandos are captured by Hydra, everyone expects them to take Steve away to experiment on but the the Hydra science division is much more interested in Sergeant James Barnes.

Out of Place by Imbecamiel. He stuck with the smiles and the upbeat messages, for the most part. People liked to hear about how much better the Super Soldier Serum had made his life, and he was happy enough to talk about it. There was so much bad news out there, people needed every win they could get. And his transformation had been a pretty dramatic win - for him, for science, for America. What was much more difficult to explain was just how confusing it all was. Just because a change is for the better doesn’t mean it isn’t hard.

It’s Not Home Without You by DaftPunk_DeLorean. When Steve shuffled down the hall in flannel pajama pants and a tank top, scrubbing his wet hair with a towel, he thought about a lot of things; his day, his search plans, how he wanted to spend the rainy evening. Mostly though, he just thought about Bucky. What he didn’t think was that he would walk into the living room and see a pair of heavy, slate-blue eyes staring back at him.

And I Am Always With You by Lauralot. He tries to reach out to Steve, but he can’t feel his arm. It’s too cold. Everything is cold save for his blood and Steve’s smile.Long after Bucky forgets his own name, he remembers “Steve.”

banish the darkness by AliuIce0814. Steve knows he doesn’t deserve mercy, but Bucky sure does.Steve goes to Mass post-CA:TWS. Someone unexpected shows up. Steve dares to hope again.

We Take Care Of Our Own by bookworm213. The Winter Soldier wanders into a homeless camp after the events in Washington. He gets help and kindness from an unexpected person.

Reconciliation by TheRedStarAtNight. With Steve and Natasha watching his back, Bucky believed he could reconcile the man he was and the man he was becoming.

Caging Demons by TheRedStarAtNight. Follow-up to my previous fic “Reconcilliation”. With new purpose, comes new responsibility for Bucky - along with a mission courtesy of Nick Fury. Even with Natasha, Steve and Sam watching his back, the spectre of his past as the Winter Soldier still haunts Bucky from the shadows.

It’s Okay, Buck by floatingsheep. After Steve rescues the 107th from the Hydra base, Steve and Bucky have a heart-to-heart chat.

happy is what happens when your dreams come true by KiaraSayre. Steve just wanted his best friend back.  He gets it, and it's not easier.

Karma’s a bitch by KiaraSayre. Steve and Sam get Bucky a dog.  The regrets begin almost immediately.

Protection Detail by KiaraSayre. Steve keeps taking reckless risks in battle and getting himself hurt, so Tony hires Darcy to babysit him and make sure he doesn’t hurt himself. Bucky thinks this is the best idea ever, and Steve hates everything.

Old Eyes by Zelos. None of their lives were easy, to be fair, but sometimes he’s reminded that Steve’s been dealt the toughest hand of them all. Written for a prompt at avengerkink:I’d love to see some fic where Steve is maybe whumped, and tired, and looking especially young and vulnerable (I can’t stop seeing him at the end of the battle in the movie, where he’s dirty, and wounded, and stunned, and kind of lost-looking).Tony or Clint POV would be awesome, but, really, I’d love to see someone’s (or several someone’s? :)) thoughts. Just something where they’re suddenly shocked at how young Captain America really is to be thrust into his the role of leadership, especially after all the major life overhauls he’s been through.

A Splintered Tomorrow by Zelos. The fragments and shards and shining, fragile things that makes up each and every one of them, and speaks of things yet to come.A WWII series.

On Your Left by Traveling Roses. Five times someone told Steve to give up looking for Bucky and two times someone didn’t. Alternately, five times someone smacked Steve on the head and said “Don’t do the thing” and he continued doing the thing and two times he listened so he could keep doing the thing.

Kindness, What Is Kindness by bookworm213. 5 times the Winter Soldier is shown the good in the world. Post Cap 2.

James Barnes, Not Bucky by serene_bibliophile. Bucky doesn’t like how Loki keeps trying to kill the Avengers.

AWOL by LaylaPendragon. Some things happen instantaneously. Others take time. Spoilers for CA:TWS. Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes POV, an exploration of triggers good and bad and the road to identity. Rated M for adult language and content.

Found You by funnierinpylean. Bucky shows up on Steve’s doorstep – dirty, weak, helpless – and Steve does what he does best; takes care of his best friend. Whoever had Bucky before Steve found him had done their best to entirely break him, and now it’s up to Steve to put him back together. Those who did this will pay – but first, Steve has to make sure Bucky is okay.

I'm taking a wee bit of a chance rec'ing a WIP, but it's so doggone good that I don't anticipate it going off the rails.

If you enjoyed Owlet's This, You Protect, you'll very likely enjoy Eliot Rosewater's Abstraction. It uses a similar internal dialogue/programming conceit to the one Owlet used, but it's very much it's own unique take on the chase for Bucky. I'd say it fits well between Owlet's more humorous take on Bucky recovering and [livejournal.com profile] marjun's Third Directive and Simple Conversation fics as far as tone, and where those fics were solely Bucky POV, this one includes Sam's and Steve's. The characterizations are all spot on, and it's worth reading if for no other reason than the name Bucky assigns in his head to Sam Wilson as he starts to emerge from the programming. :D

There's 9 chapters so far and the author is updating regularly. If you only read completed fics, it's well worth putting on your to-read list. Also, if you never read on ff.net, I suggest for this one you might consider lifting your embargo, as it's not posted on Ao3.

I polished up and titled that angsteh Bucky Barnes one-shot I wrote the other day (in other words, new and improved with more angst and more insight into Bucky's thoughts):

Orders Acknowledged
When he hears about Agent Carter's passing, he knows he has to come back.
Angst & friendship.
Rated K+
No pairings.

Read at ff.net or Ao3.

(Dang, I wish I had an illustration to stick here. I really need to get back to figuring out how to sketch...)

Okay, I blame this on tumblr.

There's been a lot of chatter over there because news dribbled out that they were filming a funeral scene this week for Captain America: Civil War. I was discussing with pretendthisiswitty (who I don't believe is on LJ) the possibility that it was for Peggy Carter, and she said something that got the plot bunny chewing on my brain:

"And maybe Bucky sneaks into the event and that’s how they find him again, since Agent Carter set up that Peggy was best buds with all Commandos."

Ugh, the feels that little throwaway line gave me! This is how I dealt with them all.

Untitled for the time being... I'll title it when I post it to the various archives.

Unbeta’d, probably edit it some more when I figure out a title and ready it to post.

A/N: A completely speculative piece, inspired by all this talk going around about the CA:CW funeral scene. Not calling it canon compliant because that canon doesn’t exist yet. My headcanon (for this story, at least) is that Bucky’s experience post CA:TWS is a mash-up of trying to regain memories, going on a self-assigned solo vengeance mission against HYDRA, and above all else, avoiding Steve because he’s ashamed of all he’s done as the Winter Soldier (basic comic book canon, pretty much). There was no sign of him sniping from the distance during AoU, so I’m running with the idea that Bucky’s been completely off grid and hasn’t yet started showing up at battles to watch Steve’s back. But as CA:CW approaches, maybe now he’s finding himself drawn more and more to Steve, which adds to his misery because it leaves him feeling like he’s being derelict in his true duty of protecting Steve. When he hears about Agent Carter’s passing, he knows he has to come back.

Platonic, since I don’t do romantic Stucky, so no pairings except Peggy & Steve.

Rating: eh, call it T. Nothing graphic. Mention of Bucky’s WWII capture and nightmares.

Warnings: might want a box of tissues if I handled this right?

Ugh. Okay.

So I've been doing a lot of sketching, all in the Captain America & Winter Soldier genre. I have a lot of fun with the process and lately I've been berating myself because I go on deviantArt or tumblr and see what's basically NY Metropolitan Museum of Art level fan art and then I look at mine and... yeah. Ugh.

But.

I have also been thinking a lot about the act of creative endeavor and the joy of simply creating, regardless of skill level, and the ugh fades a little. I realize, too, that part of the joy of creating is in sharing whatever it is you've created... whether it's for constructive criticism or just to kick yourself out of being a chicken-hearted ninny.

Interesting article today on what the Russo brothers will include in Cap 3:

"The heart of the movie will be Steve Rogers’ complicated relationship with his childhood friend Bucky Barnes..."

YES! MORE STEVE & BUCKY FRIENDSHIP EXPLORATION! *flails*

This relieves me greatly, because after some of the little things coming out of Comic-Con, like, I dunno, THIS...

Cap's Shattered Shield, Age of Ultron, SDCC photo Btk3uwhCYAAO3KR_zps6a271247.jpg

.... I was seriously worried that Avengers: Age of Ultron would mark the end of Steve Rogers. Now... kinda doesn't seem like it will? One would hope??

Cap & Bucky Bobble are relieved. I think. )

Yeah, like the article says, their friendship is... complicated.
