I'm at times amused by fandom, specifically the differences in my two fandoms. In LOTR, the 'good' reviewers tend to leave thoughtful critique, with often genius meta sprinkled in that could pass for collegiate level essay exam answers (complete with documentation).

However, in the Captain America/Marvel fandom, I know I've reached the pinnacle when I get one like this:

          ;_;

Thanks, I really needed heartbreak at work.

You monster. *sobs*

Yep. I've been called a monster. There can be no higher honor. XD

(That was for Orders Acknowledged, which is a bit of a heartrender. They'll probably destroy their computer--or mine--after they read the follow-up story I'm readying to post later this week...)

Hee hee... isn't that an adorable shot of Sebby? It's from the end a movie, can't remember which one but one that ends happily for him, for a change. LOL

I thought about using this one...

... but I was afraid that'd be too distracting.

Oh wait.

LOL! I love that kind of fb from other Tolkien fans...especially the meta!

OTOH, LotR comments can be very confusing to outsiders. I once posted a bit of cotton-candy level wee hobbit fluff featuring a wee faunt!Primula playing hide and seek with her mother.

One of my commenters: "Oh, that made me so sad!"

*grin* I knew exactly why.

And that pic is adorable and makes me smile, even though I'm not one to care much about celebrities apart from their roles. There's something so blissful about his expression.

Yeah, there is a sort of "insider-ness" that's fun with those sorts of very short reviews that on the surface appear to be completely off the mark. :)

There's something so blissful about his expression.

Isn't that such a happy face he's making? One of my favorite shots of Sebastian Stan, in large part because it seems to go along with his actual personality, which is, thankfully, far more happy and lighthearted than most of his roles.

I fear I'm a dire LOTR reviewer then as I rarely think of much to say! I introduced my friend to your CA stories and she loves them.

Your reviews are most certainly NOT dire. :) I appreciate each and everyone. I was just making the point that with the Marvel fandom, you usually don't get the long-form reviews like you do with LOTR/Tolkien.

And thank you for recommending my CA stories! I'm glad your friend enjoyed them (does this friend read them online and review or does she just enjoy them anonymously? Wondering if perhaps I'd seen her online name).

Heeeee. Love it. It is just so interesting to see the differences in how different fandoms interact over fics. And not even in a "one is better/'smarter' than another" kind of way. Just... different, and fun. (Although there are the less pleasant aspects to some of those differences - where some fan circles will welcome newbies and casual fans with open arms, and others apparently want you to present your credentials at the door. XP) Some fandoms like to get super in-depth, debating obscure lore and unclear points. Others lean more toward incoherent flailing. In some you may get an essay from pleased fans, in some you'll get one vaguely-grammatical sentence, in some you'll get links to awesome/fun/useful screenshots... and in some, the highest possible form of praise is death threats (the more improbable, the better).

Yep, exactly. LOL It's a sort of weird dynamic but fun, I'll say that.

I've found the Marvel fandom to be pretty open-armed. I was a little worried there'd be a lot of nitpicking over comic book canon, until I realized that *I* was probably more picky about that than anyone else. LOL I have to say, I haven't been in *too* many fandoms where they drew back their skirts if you didn't know every jot and tittle. I have a feeling I wouldn't stick around a fandom like that for very long!

Bahaha. Congrats. Those are the absolute best kind of reviews, huh? :DDD Readers who turn incoherent-with-joy are terribly cute, even if they don't leave the Tome Length reviews that LOTR fandom might generate.

But it is definitely a transition going from a fandom populated by the book-nerd types, to one inhabited by more comics nerds. Both are a fun group in their own right - but verrrry different. ^^

VERY cute indeed! I'll take tomes or brief yet unbridled enthusiasm any day. Heck, who am I kidding... I love any and all reviews. LOL

Very different, definitely. I was a little worried about writing Marvel fic, because the 'fan boys' have such a nasty reputation, but I... don't think any of them read fanfic? I haven't had any trouble with snarky reviews so far, anyway. I was also a little worried about writing non-slash Steve & Bucky... some of the stucky people (at least at tumblr) are sooooo militant about that ship--I figured they'd probably ignore my stories but there was a little fear that there might be some shade tossed at my stories. But again, so far, no problems. *fingers crossed* Marvel fandom seems a little bit mine-fieldish, but I guess no more so than the LOTR fandom or any big huge fandom.
