B2MeM Challenge: For O72 prompts "Captain" (Aspects of Aragorn card) and "Thundersnow (Weather card)
Format: Double Drabble
Genre: General
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Characters: Captain Thorongil, OCs
Pairings: None
Summary: Sheltering from a storm in the wilds of Rohan stirs up memories.
Their rough-built shelter, more hut than dwelling, shuddered as thunder rumbled so loudly that even Thorongil flinched. Cenric’s blue eyes widened. “What in Béma’s name?”
“In the North, we call it thundersnow,” Captain Thorongil said. He stirred their fire.
“I’ve never heard thunder during a snowstorm,” Godric said. He edged closer to the fire and glanced uneasily at the ceiling.
“It is a rare thing, even in the North. But like thunderstorms bring heavy rain, thundersnow brings heavier snow. We will no doubt find nearly a foot of snow outside on the morn.”
Cenric grinned. “We can build a snow fort.”
“Brother, you and I shall be the first to defeat the mighty Thorongil in battle, as we batter him with snowballs!”
A sudden pang of homesickness kept Thorongil from immediately responding. The time we were stranded at the Prancing Pony, and Halbarad and I engaged in a mighty snowbattle against Nob and the Tunnelly youngsters... and when I was a child, ambushing my brothers...
He shook off the melancholy and gave the soldiers a steely-eyed stare. “You challenge the great Snow Warrior of the North at your peril!”
“For Rohan!” they shouted gleefully.
“For Eriador!” And Bree, and Rivendell...

Date: 2012-03-03 01:22 pm (UTC)I was really surprised--and happy--to see that thundersnow was a prompt. It's a pretty rare occurrence that doesn't happen everywhere. I had to dig around the M-e atlast to figure out where it seemed likely to get it! I figured weather patterns in the plains of Rohan might match our Great Plains, and up around Bree, they might have our same sort of noisy weather systems. :)

Date: 2012-03-07 06:46 am (UTC)It's good to see this playful side of Aragorn and the rest of the soldiers. Even the threat of a thundersnow didn't dampen their spirit :)
