Ok. Aragorn & others ride to the gate. Talk to Mouth of Sauron. Head off. Ride back. Then Aragorn - still on his horse - has his The Talk (I love it, btw). And then, suddenly, the horse disappears. All horses disappear. Gone. Vanish in the air. ??? Movie-mistake, I guess.
Oh yes, I love the scene. And The Talk. And "For Frodo". And the black-red cloak. :) And horse's cloak with Gondor tree. :) And believe it or not, that is the detail I've never noticed before. *lol*
I love that picture of His Most Glorious and Heroic Kingliness, even if we only see his back.
Let's assume the terrain wasn't good for cavalry charges, so when ordering his troops Aragorn had the horses taken to the rearguard, and settled on a hand to hand combat. It happens you know. After all the English had such a resounding victory at Agincourt because the French insisted on mounted knights charging on horses.
Very true, and they were charging through terrible mud at that, which didn't help things. These authors and filmmakers need to mention these little details, though! LOL
I had to do much googling, but that's called a "caparison" or a "trapper", which is a covering of cloth that displays a coat of arms, or in this case, the emblem of the White Tree. It's absolutely beautiful... I just love that Tolkien created the White Tree as the symbol of Gondor and the King. Me and my soft spot for trees!

And a very nice one it is!
