... and my bucket list will henceforth always have one item on it that I didn't get to do:  watch a space shuttle launch in person.  Came within a week of it, once, on our previous trip to Florida, and one other time we came with a few days, but it never worked out.  But boy, has it ever been fun (and sometimes heartbreaking) seeing the launches on tv all these years.  Amazing, amazing, amazing.

Godspeed, Atlantis!

It was hard to watch, to be honest, because all the while I was thinking how hard we worked to beat the Russians to the moon, and now we're relegated to hitching rides with them, at least until we get another shuttle program going. It's a bit... galling, I guess.

I felt like saluting! But I was too busy blowing my nose and sniffing. *sigh*

I missed watching the launch this morning (wah!) because I was working, but LOL, I actually did kinda see a launch in person once while my family was in Florida. We were staying about 100 miles north of Cape Canaveral at the time, and just happened to look up at the right moment to see what looked like some huge firecracker going off. (Oh right--space shuttle launch scheduled for today!) Will always remember that! :)

It really did catch your attention, any time you caught a glimpse of it. We've seen it fly over the house at night, and one time there was a landing where the commander decided to fly it right over our corner of the state--I didn't think the commanders had any say in what the flight path home was, but evidently they do. Hearing that double sonic boom was awesome. :)
