You know, I've looked at this photo I don't know how many times and I can't quite pin down what I see in his eyes. In some ways, he seems to be staring inwardly, perhaps with sorrow? I often wonder if this was taken during the scene where they were looking for the bodies of Pip and Merry... or perhaps when Eomer is pointing out the pyre. Or if I look at it another way, it could be as he's looking at the tracks, and he's thinking it out. Of course, then there's the idea of taking it completely out of the movies and pretending it's some other scene, which could be just about anything!
I'm with you. For the life of me I cannot figure out what this scene is about or where in the movies this scene is from. Probably one of the many deleted scenes that we didn't get to see.
There is something in his eyes that says so many things. At first he looks like someone with pure exhaustion...spent. But the longer you stare at it, his eyes (as you stated) start telling a story.
I do see sorrow ("staring inwardly").. a man who somehow, for an instant, lost all hope, and a kindle of that hope coming back. Some faint memory that helps him cling to that hope.
And then there's realization and determination. This photo is reminiscent of a powerful drabble that docmon wrote about the passage---"Their farewells had been said in the great hall by the fire".... "Aragorn sat with his head bowed to his knees; only Elrond knew fully what this hour meant to him.” ---- It's called "Aragorn's Moment" (in SOA) It's the final farewell before the fellowship leaves Rivendell. Through this drabble Docmon brilliantly described Aragorn's thoughts.
You need to read it in order to understand what I'm getting at. I picture Aragorn looking up ... and this is exactly what his face would look like. So much power, realization, determination, and most of all, resolve, in this look.
That ficlet of docmon's is a wonderful extrapolation of that line of Tolkien's, isn't it? And this could definitely illustrate it, especially the "leave all hope behind". It's the look of a man who's determined to do his duty, which is at the essence of Aragorn's character.
