I do confess, I find the falling skull scene just about the most ridiculous in the entire three movies, though Aragorn's subsequent heart breaking despair goes a long way in redeeming it! *Want's to hug poor ranger!*
I guess I'm just in the minority... I like the skulls and always will (but then I didn't see the movies after having read the books--maybe I might have different feelings about that scene if I had).
I think PJ's delaying the Chief Dead Guy's decision the way he did was genius, because while not canon, it still showed very quickly and viscerally just how deep Aragorn's love of Gondor went. And of course, Viggo's brilliant in showing such raw despair like that... a lot of actors couldn't have pulled that off.
As I mentioned I'm not very crazy about the skull thingy, but I love the scene when they come out of the caves. His Sorrowful Forlorness is juts great. *bows"
I just love the scene as it is in the books too much to enjoy the skulls, but I understand why PJ delayed and sent the Army of the Dead to the Pelonnor film-wise it works perfectly.
But for cannon Aragorn, the way the scene stood at the theatrical edition worked much better.
The theatrical ends when Aragorn blocks the King of the dead's sword, and says Andúril has been reforged. Then you only see him arriving at the Pelennor with the army at his back. It works fine for cannon Aragorn. Though I love Aragorn forlorn, and the funny scene with PJ as a pirate, this is one of the rare cases in which I prefer the theatrical scene.
No, on the theatrical you don't, but the scene still works perfectly. They showed a bit of the forlorn scene in the last trailer. So, it frustrated me no end not to see iy in the theatrical version when ROTK was released.
That would have been frustrating, because at that time you had no idea that the EE version would include it. Much as I regret not having been in on the fun of the theatre releases as they happened, there's a lot to be said for having seen the EE version as my first impression of the entire thing.
That would have been a good consolation, yes. I always feel sad at the end of ROTK because of the story itself *and* because it's come to an end and there's no more.
