Black Panther.... lsdjfkalsdkjfsdiofjldkj
Feb. 19th, 2018 09:42 amFlailing and keyboard smashing seem to be all I'm capable of at the moment regarding this film, because it is just that good. My word. I don't even know where to start. I'll try to flail without being spoilery, but I'm putting his under a cut just to add a layer of caution:
T'Challa... I am still utterly enamored of him. His arc in Winter Soldier was so good, and it continues in BP. Plus he is so endearingly Steve Rogers-esque in so. many. ways.
Chadwick Boseman apparently has the ability to make me ugly cry in public, so there's that.
Okoye... OKOYE!!! Of all the tremendously wonderfully badass women in this film, she stood out for me. She's warm, funny, a complete warrior. Honestly, if Hot Toys comes out with an Okoye, I may have a new Christmas wish.
Shuri... oh my goodness, she is a charmer and so hilarious and wonderful. "WHAT ARE THOOOOOSE?????" still has me dying. She gives her brother no respect and it's perfect.
Ross... ROSS??? I ended up LIKING ROSS??? What in the world?? I did *not* see that coming, because he was such a smarmy, awful, mean-to-my-Bucky asshole in CATWS that I went in with the expectation that my hatred would increase exponentially but... I NOW LIKE HIM???
Nakia... so wise, so beautiful... so aware of who she is and what she believes. Really, really a wonderful woman. ALL of the women were amazing.
Killmonger... okay, so I had read all over that he's a sympathetic villain and for the first 3/4 or more, I could only think of the "Okay, yes, good motivation but still murder" meme. But by film's end?? I did find that sympathy people were talking about.
This movie had *meat* and that's what I need in a Marvel movie. I know that everyone was gaga over Thor: Ragnarok, but unpopular opinion: Dink and I were both very disappointed in it because it was too light. Yes, it touched on themes of brotherhood and whatnot, but I just found it to be as substantial as cotton candy and about as satisfying, which is to say, not at all. So I went into BP hoping for it to be heavier and more plotty and more emotional and it gave me that experience, in spades. They dealt with the societal clusterf*** that is racism and did it without resorting to making that the sole point of the film while also simultaneously making it the sole point of the film. I know that makes no sense, but when you see the film, you'll see what I mean. They did not launch a message from a bully pulpit but still kept the "things need to change" theme abundantly clear... and imbue the message with hope and wisdom, which is always something I look for in any movie. T'Challa has a line in an address to the UN that gave me goosebumps, it was so perfect.
The music was tremendous. All I'd heard of the soundtrack was the urban hip/hop songs that overlaid all the trailers, and I was very, very prepared to be disappointed by the movie trying to somehow force that very American genre on top of very NOT America Wakanda. I wanted the same attention to cultural history and detail that went into the costumes to go into the soundtrack and I was honestly afraid that they'd ignore the rich traditional African tribal music... BUT THEY DIDN'T. Oh thank goodness, the Wakandan music was absolutely wonderful. And the hiphop that was used in the American urban settings fit perfectly as well. My only fear now is that the actual soundtrack you can buy might only contain the hiphop parts. I need to hear that traditional African music again.
And now another cut because of EXTREME SPOILAGE. Skip if you don't want spoiled. Seriously. You have been warned. This is for the folks that have seen the movie....
BUCKY!!!! He once again nailed a stinger scene at the very end of the credits, and it was everything I needed. There was so much showing-not-telling packed into a 30-second little spot. Really well done as far as showing his now apparently healed state of mind--yet he's still obviously broken and sorrowful, which ugh, I just needed to hug him. His eyes look so doggone sad. :''''''(((((((
His entire demeaner was somewhat bemused and bewildered (to the point that everyone in the theater couldn't help but giggle even as they mumbled variations of, "Aw, it's Bucky!" as he came out of that little hut), but he knew who he was and what he wanted to be called and that did amazing things for my Bucky-lovin' heart.
There were symbolic things everywhere in that stinger scene, from the colors of his very African clothing (hello, red and blue) to the filtering of the light (everything is soft and peaceful) to the water (water and death have been so symbolic in Marvel movies) to the sunrise (I'm believing it to be a sunrise, as a bit of a contrast to the sunset theme that ran throughout the rest of the movie), to the children being completely comfortable around him and calling out "White Wolf!", which, in the comics, is an adopted son of T'Chaka. So we can assume that Bucky has achieved a level of brotherhood with T'Challa? I hope? But overall, the impression was that he had moved forward with healing and that he now is apparently kind enough that children flock to him, which is... alksdfjiasjdiofsdjlfkjsdkf!!! In the comics, Bucky is AMAZINGLY GOOD with kids and seeing those kids calling out a nickname/new name?? for him was just absolutely lovely.
I do think, contrary to what some fanboy writers on comic book sites are speculating, that it's a stretch to think that Bucky will become White Wolf and abandon the good-guy Winter Soldier persona, or that this means he stays in Wakanda and never becomes Captain America. I think this is a nice nod to the comics and a way to show that Bucky is an ally to Wakanda and will be considered one of their own, going forward.
That stinger scene with Bucky also proved that you really can't believe one word that comes out of Sebastian Stan's mouth when it comes to what Marvel has planned for Bucky. XD He's been swearing up and down, looking as angelic as a schoolboy the entire time, that he wasn't in the movie. Yeah, right, Seb.
Also, since this is under a spoiler cut: I died when I found out the reason for Okoye's "Don't freeze" and T'Challa... froze. Oh my goodness. Good he have been more Steve Rogers at that moment???? It boggles and delights me that T'Challa may actually be worse with women than Steve Rogers.
XDDDDDDDD
There's sooo much more I can say. I'm seeing it again this afternoon, with Dink. I have a birthday voucher for a free ticket I have to use by Saturday and as the weather may turn icy, today was the best chance to use it, plus Dink doesn't have classes because it's President's Day. I'm sure after seeing it again I'll have a thousand new things to flail over and I will no doubt do some of that flailing here. XD
Y'all hurry up and see it so we can squee together! (If you have seen it, feel free to message me if you don't want to get spoilery in the comments; and everyone of course be aware that comments can contain spoilers).

Date: 2018-02-20 08:49 pm (UTC)Haven't seen and unless it comes out on TV probably won't. Movies around here are... not around here. I just can't see driving 25 miles to a movie theatre in another town in another county. Unless they put it at the mall, which means my knees in your back or your back in my face.. which ever! :P
One of many (or is that two?) that I don't do theatres. Do miss satelite tv though but not enough to pay for it. *laughs* And speaking of Thor, it will be out 3/8? anyway, mine is ordered thru Walmart since Amazon has their fingers where they shouldn't belong. *laughs*
I'm so cold I'm not making any sense!

Date: 2018-02-21 04:02 pm (UTC)I hope you like Thor: Ragnarok when you get it. I have to say that it really wasn't one of my favorites--as much as I like Marvel humor, that one was balanced too far toward comedy and Thor seemed out of character a lot. I need to see it again, though, to see if I still feel that way. I've only seen it once.
