Someone else may be able to answer this one more confidently, but it seems I've read that he rode horses as a child but didn't consider himself any kind of expert rider when he took the role of Aragorn--or at least, that's the impression he tried to give, an impression that sort of fell to pieces when he actually got on the horse and showed them what a naturally gifted horseman he was.
