I know, I'm very late to the whole poll-taking thing, but here's my question for y'all:

[Poll #2056890]

Personally, I usually view everything in my own style, because often color combinations people use are hard to read or make me squint because they're too bright. Sometimes, during a surfeit of curiosity, I'll peek at the user's style instead and I usually have to switch back almost immediately.

That's something I've always appreciated about LJ, that they allow us to look at everything through our own lens, so to speak. I know over at tumblr, where there is no such option, you can give yourself a migraine looking at someone's tumblr... there's so many teens and they think it's cool to have white fonts on multi-colored backgrounds. Ughhhhh. Some tumblrs need seizure warnings. :P

Using my own style means that I know exactly where everything is on the page.

I used to view in my own style only for the same reasons as you. Then it stopped working for a while, and afterwards I found that 90% of the LJs I regularly read are in a style I don't have problems with, so I just left it as it was, and add ?style=mine manually if necessary. (Mostly if a blog's style causes technical issues, though.) But I've also set my browser at always displaying websites in my favourite font (Georgia, or at least a serif font) and am mostly reading LJ during the dark hours when my blue filter is on, too, which takes out a lot of brightness as well. This helps a lot for tumblr, too (where I'm currently taking my first baby steps *g* ).

I think the folks on my flist all have really wildly divergent personal styles, so I've found it easier to just stick to my own style.

Ooh, tumblr baby steps! It's a fun site, but definitely one where you have to carefully curate your experience. There's some really terrible, awful trolls on that site, some fandoms worse than others (I do Marvel almost exclusively over there, save for a few Tolkien people that I follow. I only rarely blog anything about Tolkien, though). :/ I think I've pretty much weeded out all those type people so my dash stays pretty drama-free, but sometimes it gets a little... fractious. And I have to go on an "unfollow spree". But that hasn't happened in over a year now, so I think I've found a safe zone. *whew*

I almost always use my own style when reading because it's just so much easier on my old eyes. :)

That being said, I do like to look at certain other styles too. I love seeing what people choose (and sometimes wondering *why*, lol! ;)

LOL... same here. Some aesthetics I just don't really appreciate in quite the same way, I suppose? To each their own, though, which is what LJ is all about.

I use ?format=light if I find it difficult to read in certain styles. I never use my own style for other people's journals. It feels odd somehow, it feels like seeing other people writing on my LJ!

I'm not sure what ?format=light is, but that's an interesting thought, that it feels like other people writing on your own journal. I hadn't ever looked at it that way.

Try it! Just add ?format=light to the url of the journal you're reading.

Ah, I figured it was a code to add to the end of a URL to strip the style from someone's journal, but I couldn't get it to work so I assumed I was mistaken.

It only seems to work on specific journal entries, though, not the entire journal with multiple entries to scroll through. And that explains why it wasn't doing anything for me when I tried putting it at the end of "http://layne67.livejournal.com" Plus my browser automatically added / between .com and the ?

I was blindly shooting in the dark and missing the target completely. LOL

I usually just view in the user's style over here, since I don't too often come across particularly difficult to read combinations. Reeeeally wish it was an option for Tumblr, though. I'm surprised by the number of people with really slow-loading, hard-to-read, or otherwise broken styles that cause ridiculous glitches. :P

Tumblr sometimes reminds me of the old MySpace pages that teenagers made... they were ridiculously noisy, confusing and visually awful most of the time. :P Dink's user on our computer is the same way. Lots of bright colors and patterns on the wallpaper that make the actual icons almost impossible to find and use.

Must just be a teen thing!

I pretty much stick to my style, but sometimes I'm curious and look at others' once in a while, especially if they ask how we like a new one.

That's pretty much how I operate as well. I'll always take a peek at a new design if someone asks.

Unless the LJ I'm looking at is over the top on colour or crazy stuff, I used theirs. It's nice to see what they think is cool or soothing or entertaining.

I kept finding so many ones that hurt my eyes to read that I got tired of switching back and forth between my style and theirs, so I pretty much just stick to my own style these days, with an occasional peek to satisfy my curiousity. :)
