Haiti was hit a short time ago by a 7.0 earthquake and a 5.9 aftershock.  I don't think anyone on my flist is from that nation, but if any of you have loved ones there, my prayers are with you and with all the Haitians, as well as with any other people in the Caribbean affected by this.

Oh my goodness, that's a huge one. Poor Haiti, they've been through so much already in recent years.

I fear we'll be hearing worse and worse news as time goes on. The earthquake was shallow, from what I'm seeing, and that's always far worse.

My prayers are with the Haitians, as well. It was terrible to watch those scenes in the news!

I think as daylight comes today, we'll be shocked at the devastation. There's an aid agency headquartered in my city that's already down there (they feed 7,000 children a day in Haiti, have for several years) and they're already mobilized to help. That made me feel a little better, but it will be a sad day as we see the extent of the damage.

The photos I've seen so far look as if they were taken right in the middle of a war zone. The damage seems to be devastating and I fear the number of victims will be very high.

I've been watching the news most of the morning and it does look horrendous. Getting aid and comfort into the affected areas will be a huge challenge, from the looks of things.

Your LJ was actually the first place I heard of this disaster and went and checked the news as a result. There was a video which didn't have any commentary or even a news presenter, just the sounds of the moment as people cried or tried to make sense of what had happened. It really brought it home just how terrible this is for those living through it. I'm sure the death toll will be far greater than predicted and, yes, they can use all the prayers they can get.

It's really hard to imagine, in many ways. No phones, no electricity, basically no infrastructure... that country is so poor; it will be a huge challenge to set things right there, if they ever can be. It's simply horrific.

It was really, really horrible. All my thoughts are with the Haitians, and those people there who suffered the consequences

No one deserves goes through this.

The more we learn of the magnitude of the disaster, the more we pity those poor Haitians.

What a tragedy.
