For those of you who like a little NFL with your Middle-earth, or vice versa:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/dc-sports-bog/wp/2015/12/31/how-lord-of-the-rings-took-over-the-redskins-locker-room/

I've been casting about for a new team to root for (the St Louis Rams have become nothing but a huge clusterf*** now thanks to a truly reprehensible owner and I doubt I'll ever root for them again. Kurt Warner and 1999 seem longer ago than ever). To be honest, in part because of the ugliness of the Rams situation but also because of the entire concussion issue and the callous way the NFL treats retired players with health issues, my liking for NFL football has waned in recent years.

But a team full of Tolkien addicts? I'm back in. At least temporarily.

Go, Washington.

Damn - I have real issues with the team for not changing their name to something less horrific for the Native American communities in the US. Now I have to like the team too. I know - I'll just like individual players who are emoting their inner geeks on their quest to Mordor. I'll ignore the horrible front office and management who refuse to get rid of the team's name.

Just assume they are named after the potatoes - it would be much more hobbity anyway!

LOL... well, there's the problem of their logo, but otherwise that works. *g*

I wish, unfortunately it's not just the name, but their logo, their fan song, and other things that make the name "Redskins" horrific.

Right now they are ahead of the Green Bay Packers by one point in the beginning of the second half. Lots more football remaining to be played.

I love the idea of potatoes, however. The vision of red-skinned potatoes wearing helmets running down the field of play makes me chuckle.

Yes, the players are the ones this is about, not the problematic front office. Which is also also conundrum for me with the Rams. The players can't help that the owner is reprehensible, but at the same time, said players don't really inspire much in the way of loyalty when they play so terribly. Hence my allegiance switch. It's just very hard not to root for Tolkien geeks. :)

What fun - if I was into American football I would support them, for sure.

I'm glad to see that Tolkien is still providing inspiration in all walks of life. :)

That's cute! Of course [personal profile] linaewen had Boromir tagged as a Packers fan from way back.

Oh how funny. G for Gondor and Green Bay works for me. I'll have to think about what character would like my St Louis Cardinals now. I'll say Radagast, since it's baseball and won't interfere with his rooting for the Browns. He'd like the bird connection I'm sure, and h might also appreciate that St. Louis once had a baseball team named the Browns. ;)

Ha! That is so fun! If I ever decide to become a football fan, I guess I know who to cheer for... *g*

I can actually take or leave NFL, but I do kind of like having a team to pull for in the playoffs, if nothing else so that when we're watching the Super Bowl and stuffing our faces while laughing at the commercials, I actually do care about who wins the game. And Washington just won my allegiance, methinks. Hard to root against a team full of hobbits who just want to get back to the Shire. *g*

I LOVE IT! This is awesome! i might have to root for them... along with Alex Smith and the KC Chiefs (I Loved him when he was the quarterback with the 49ers) I used to be a die-hard 49er fan until new management (of course) did him wrong. But he's in a better team now!

I bet you're very happy today with the KC win yesterday! :)

I'm definitely pulling for a Chiefs/Washington Super Bowl.

I saw this earlier this week over at Tolkien on Facebook. I thought it cute; not much into football (gave up on the Packers eons ago!) but now, if some enterprising baseball team would think in terms of 'bottom of the 9nth with Gandalf on the mound, here's the wind-up, the pitch, it's low and inside; but wait! the runner at 2nd is stealing! It's Frodo! The catcher throws to catch him but the baseman misses! Holy Valar! Frodo is running for home! He's stealing home! the game is over! FRODO WINS!"

lol we all have our fantasies don't we? :)
