This site nabbed at least one of my stories; I logged a complaint so hopefully it won't happen again. This person does at least seem willing to take down stories when asked. And now to go change my tags. *sigh*

I got this warning through
fanficrants. Apparently a website has cropped up that is trawling through LJ, looking for anything tagged fanfic, and then reposting it WITHOUT PERMISSION.
Here is a link: http://www.donotlink.com/framed?561309
The link diverts you from the original. It takes you to a separate page that will not show up on search engines, in order to defeat the thief's purpose of attracting search engines. (The site is full of advertising.) But as you can see, a lot of people have been complaining.
I don't know if any of my friends may have been victimized, but there's a Complaint Page, which you can go to and make him take your stuff down.
I don't have time right now to see if he's lifted any of my stories, but I will be checking as soon as I can.
(And I'm using my fanfic tag so if he steals this entry he won't be getting any real fanfic, LOL!)

They then edited that comment because CLEARLY they know they’re in the wrong, but I’ve got the email in case anyone wants a screencap. The thing is, they aren’t going to stop.
Best Wishes, and thank you for spreading the word.
editing for typos, sorry about that.

Date: 2014-10-15 06:44 pm (UTC)Still waiting to see if they take down my posts--which I had to chuckle as this one appears prominently now on their front page. Surely all this fuss won't be worth it in the end when word gets round LJ and everyone changes their tags so that the only thing they'll scoop up is complaints about their site!

Date: 2014-10-15 06:47 pm (UTC)Good luck for you!

Date: 2014-10-15 08:08 pm (UTC)The only good thing coming from this in my eyes is that fandom in general is sticking together, and that's a good thing in my book.

Date: 2014-10-15 08:14 pm (UTC)Thanks so much, and if I were to give you my email, could I trouble you for those screen caps? I haven't had time to try and grab yet myself, though I have contacted LJ admin for advice, and someone else I was talking to reported them to their ISP, and I've asked for that information too, so it can be shared.

Date: 2014-10-15 08:22 pm (UTC)Amen to that! I'm fully with you.
Yeah, sure, drop me a PM and I'll mail it to you. Since I last checked I saw your and mine LJ already on a now huge exception list... *g* this is -thankfully - spreading like bush fire.

Date: 2014-10-15 08:26 pm (UTC)Also, I was given this: https://who.is/whois/fanfic-journal.com
I'm not that saavy, so I'm still translating, but I think I've emailed at least one of those addresses already. I need to look at my sent file to be sure.
PM on the way.

Date: 2014-10-15 07:32 pm (UTC)Edit: obviously not. Scrolling down I found two more similar posts on the first page....
Edit 2: Sorry, I'm at dinner at the moment, therefor all the edits, but couldn't resist checking up if something changed... and indeed it has. The discussion/comments on he complain page are very interesting, and all in our favour. I suppose it's soon going to be leaning back and waiting for the site to be deleted by wordpress for violation of TOS...

Date: 2014-10-15 08:13 pm (UTC)I just wrote a preventive interdiction to repost anything by me; let's see if something by me is popping up there after all...
I also placed a help request at LJ to learn about what license our posts are under. I'm going to quote it later in my journal, but let me just say the answer is disappointing: they have no idea and tell me to consult a lawyer. Hello?
I know from being a forum administrator that the default TOS of such a forum state that the content of the forum, i.e. the entries and comments the members write, are by law owned by the forum owner. Most state that they will not make use of this ownership and leave the right to their entries to the authors of an entry (as I did as well). It feels rather weird to me that the people of a site like LJ have no clue what the content of their site is, legally speaking. Tsk...

Date: 2014-10-15 10:02 pm (UTC)Having been plagarized at fanfiction.net is the reason I lock all my fic under friends. But I checked anyway. Could not find anything. Means they'd have to hit up ff.net.
Still, I hope everyone get's their own back and the thief get's theirs... if you know what I mean.

Date: 2014-10-16 12:08 pm (UTC)I've been fortunate in the Tolkien fandom... no plagiarizing from anyone that I know of (and I don't really consider this situation plagiarizing, since the stories did have a link to my LJ as the source. To me plagiarizing is stealing and claiming it's your own). But back when I was active in the Adam-12 fandom, there was a BNF who ran a huge website about the show and he blatantly copy/pasted my actor bios. It took about 16 email exchanges with that bullheaded idiot before he finally agreed to credit the source. I wanted them taken down completely but sometimes you have to be happy with a compromise. Ironically, he lost the entire domain anyway because Universal Studios sued him when he started using it to raise money. He also got sued by Kent McCord for using his photos without authorization. The guy (the site owner, not McCord!) was an impossible jerk.

Date: 2014-10-16 01:13 am (UTC)Now the person doing this is a member of LJ.
LJ has rules against botting and copyright infringement.
http://www.livejournal.com/support/faq/136.html
Not sure what these folks can do, but this person is also stealing people's LJ entries that are NOT fanfic so long as entries are marked such.
Seems an invasion of privacy of some sort, and LJ in the past has not approved of bots. Also the person doing this is a RUSSIAN. That should tell you mega things.
Also, since this seems an aggregator there is money being generated by that RSS theft for the blog owner. Why do it if not for money; Russians do that sort of theft all the time. It's called HACKING.
I tried to comment at fanficrants but I'm not a member and have no interest in the wank that usually goes on there.
So just telling you, who have friends who were victimized by this scum bag.

Date: 2014-10-16 12:11 pm (UTC)When I looked at the site this morning I didn't see anything that wasn't fanfic related--in some cases it was just posts talking about writing progress but still had a fanfic or fanfiction tag and so I suppose that's why it was swept up. But if they're on LJ now, definitely someone to watch out for. Do you have a username for them?
no subject
Date: 2014-10-16 09:28 pm (UTC)Not sure where or if it starts further back; I went back about 20 pages and nada. The Russian site owner shows up and begins being a total jerk; with really poor English skills. Which is why I know they are using this site for money making. No one puts that much effort into a free thing, esp. those from Russia (LJ comes to mind along with all the anti-russian govt hackers etc)
I saw a regular LJ entry there yesterday and contacted the LJ-er. There were private entries (not friends locked but really!!!~) as well as fanfic etc. He/she sent in the complaint. Hopefully it all works out. One reason my stories are friend's locked. *nods with experience*
Edit to add LJ problem boy.

Date: 2014-10-16 10:06 pm (UTC)Even after something like this happens, I... don't want to lock my stories. Or the Aragorn-a-day or the silly Steve and Bucky Bobbles posts. There are too many people who are "drive by" viewers, who don't comment but who at times will surprise me by telling me they really enjoy my LJ but just don't comment because they can't think of anything to say, which I totally understand. I don't want to block those folks just because of one or two bad eggs. I suppose if this guy wasn't at least willing to remove comment, I might feel forced to lock stuff, though it would be rather silly as it's publicly available at 2-3 archives. Locking it here wouldn't do me any good, and I'm not taking stories off the archives because archives are important to fandom and I want to support them.
Anyway, I'm starting to ramble!

Date: 2014-10-16 10:21 pm (UTC)I was plagarized (entire chapters stolen) at fanfiction.net.
Some of those same pieces are also at my LJ and many of my original fanfiction fans used to come by. Some have become friends and that's fine. But It is hard enough to deal with a person stealing your stuff when said person lives in another country. Fortunately at the time I was in contact with a lady friend in Queensland (a legal student) and she advised me what could and could not be done. It was stressful, and even after she yanked the piece, she rehashed it and did it again. *sigh* Round 2.
I also have original fiction and do not do not do not! want it stolen. I don't mind sharing if someone speaks to me, but frankly, I'm not sure I'd even put them up at fictionpress.com for the same reasons.
Call me chicken. :)
And ramble is good, especially through the woods in Autumn. :)
