I LOVE this moment! Mostly for Elrond, of course, ;o) but there is so much in this giving of the sword as well as the accepting of it... I did not like the Andúril-related storyline until this moment, when I realised that it has an enormous visual value. Yay to PJ for having ideas such as these!
I agree. There is a tradition in some countries (historically) that the giving of a sword is the same as giving of a soul to a warrior. I always liked that idea. Have in fact done that with someone I knew. This scene reminds me of that so much; and yes, I still feel that thrill as the sword Anduril is lifted high (aside from the "longest freaking sword in the world" thought). LOL
the giving of a sword is the same as giving of a soul to a warrior.
What a lovely thought. I wonder if the Vikings believed that... I've heard that they believed if they died without their weapon in hand that they wouldn't make it to Valhalla (or something like that--I'm paraphrasing and probably muddling it completely). When Boromir reaches for his sword and gives that sort of sigh and smile when his hand grips it, I always think of the Vikings.
I know the Japanese had the sword tradition. Vkings in 2 ways: a warrior needed his blade to go to Valhalla but also the breath of a friend, ally (human or not) could strengthen the body / soul.
Only folks I know today who have a "feeling" for their weapons is the Russians: they write freaking poetry to their guns. @.@

Definitely a sword made for someone 7 ft tall!
