Sleepy Monday thoughts...

The kid is off on a little overnight shopping adventure with her BFF and BFF's mom, which means I HAVE NEARLY AN ENTIRE DAY TO MYSELF.
Oh bliss. *G*
I love being a mom, don't get me wrong, but to get a day to myself during summer vacation is like a little glimpse of heaven. I'll do the usual mundane things like laundry and tidying up the house but I also hope to a) catch up on emails (woefully behind in that area. Woefully.); b) beta a chapter for Everleigh that's been languishing since last week; and c) maybe do some scribbling down of words of my own. And I might also get my sketchbook out. I've been trying to rekindle my long (very long) lost skill of drawing. It's been hit and miss, but it's a challenge that I'm enjoying. Don't, er, look for rs9 quality Aragorn artwork though. I... yeah, I'm still working on the basics like "How to shade". LOL
I also trimmed the left hand fingernails and tuned the guitar and played for a bit. Haven't done that since before my mastectomies and I miss it. I have to be careful how I rebuild the callouses on my fingers, though--no "playing 'til my fingers bleed" because even though my risk for lymphedema is very small, I still have to be careful about things like cuts and sunburns and exercising the muscles too close to the point of exhaustion that could trigger it. So I only played for about 5 minutes, but it was reassuring to see that I hadn't forgotten how! I don't do any playing in a band anymore, wah. That broke up and life moves on, but I still want to keep it up for my own pleasure.
The weather and pool temperatures finally cooperated and I got in for the first time this year, and I wondered how well I'd do swimming. The answer? Floating=good; actual swimming=ow. The chest muscles are still too tender for anything like swimming, so mostly I just floated around, and... giggled a lot because my chest area is now more buoyant. LOL!! What a hoot!! Not that I can rely on the perkies, as LooLoo loves to call them, keeping me afloat in the wake of a Titanic disaster, but it gave me a good giggle. :D
Also... saw The Edge of Tomorrow. GOOD movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it. But it's very much a "man's" movie, if you're into the whole gender categorization of movies (which I tend not to because I don't like the movies that gender-judgers think I should because, OMG, I'm a girl). In other words, not a lot of emotional, character-driven drama (it's no From Here to Eternity) but it brought to mind the old WWII movies that focused mainly on camaraderie amongst warriors and a good character arc of an officer who was a real paper-pushing wimp but had to learn on the fly how to fight on the battleground. And there was a lot of humor in it--the audience laughed out loud quite a bit (including me). Say what you want about Tom Cruise's odd personal life, but the man can and does entertain. And I had a sort of fangirly moment this morning when I woke up and checked twitter--I had tweeted a very brief "Edge of Tomorrow is very entertaining" tweet on the way home last night, and I noticed this morning that one of the secondary actors, Tommy Campbell, favorited it! A brush with fame! LOL (And I'm kicking myself for not saying something a little more pithy.)
Of course, that brush with fame was very, very minor compared with the interactions fans were blessed to experience at Philly Con (I think that's what it was called??) over the weekend. My tumblr is seriously clogged with photos of Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie joyfully hugging and mugging for the camera with probably every single person that attended. I have very little experience with cons, but I honestly can't recall hearing about an actor so gleefully and joyfully throwing himself into a con experience like he did. There are endless anecdotes about how sincere and kind he was. If he saw someone shaking from nerves, he'd take their hand or hug them while trying to put them at ease. He gave hugs despite the con handler/police harping at the fans "DO NOT HUG HIM!!" It seems he told so many girls to be proud of who they were and never be ashamed of their looks. It's so refreshing to see that he's apparently eager to encourage kids who might be struggling with esteem issues (he had a rough time of it himself in school, from what I've read. He immigrated to the US when he was about middle-school age and so was the chubby new kid with a weird accent... yeah, seems he really knows the struggle!)
One girl's anecdote about meeting him him on the train on the way home particularly moved me: even though he was tired from the long day and she only said a shy, "Hi", he was friendly and accommodating and actually suggested she take a pic of them together. When she didn't want to smile because she didn't like her teeth, he immediately told her to smile and be herself and not to ever be ashamed... gah. What an incredible sweetheart! Chris Evans said once that "Sebastian is the sweetest kid on the planet" and I don't think he was exaggerating). So, he left a lot of giddy smiles and tears in his wake. The more I find out about Sebastian Stan, the more I find to admire. Looks are one thing, but character trumps all when it comes to whether I get really excited about an actor (Viggo is in that same category of "genuinely nice person"). I'm glad to find out that Sebastian Stan seems to have his head on straight and a huge heart as well. If you're curious about the fun fan photos with him, there's a tumblr here that's been retweeting tons of them. Highly entertaining and stuff to make your heart smile and make you feel a little better about humanity. Really can't say enough about how impressed I am.
Okay, I'll stop fangirling now. May everyone have a lovely week!

LOL... Steb Stan is pretty young, isn't he. I don't tend to think much about age when I fangirl, though, probably because I don't do it in a way that involves fantasizing myself in any kind of relationship with whoever I'm fangirling (other than these days thinking maybe if Seb Stan needs some mothering, I could bring him cookies or cook him a meal or something. Or marry my daughter off to him. LOL)
Rare and precious indeed... and it was very relaxing and refreshing, thank you!
