I had SIX!!!!!!! Houdin Silkies. and they are as batty as all get out but make the most MARVELLOUS mothers. We used to raise our pheasants under them. Batty used to take 18 eggs and she was the best of all Mum's .... if she found a daisy in her run she'd cluck and call and break it up into little bits and give a bit of daisy to each of her babies (who ended up like elephants to her size... )

I had.. Batty, Henlade, Grumpy, Sticky (she had to have her legs straightened and exercised every morning as she'd get STUCK from sitting on her eggs... and Fizzy and Mizzum.

Silkies have black skin under that white fluff! and all Houdins are wonderful... such characters... adorable birds!!! So easy to look after and lay quite decent sized eggs for a small bird!

Aw, you had them?? That is incredibly amazing. I was reading a little about them and saw they make terrific mothers.

Chickens!
Had to believe that I really LIKE chickens. Goofy, silly, annoying things that they can be.
*Pictures having a dozen running around my place, bugging the neighbors et al.*
*sighs*
Doubt the land lord or the city would allow it; although Sacramento CA is now allowing neighborhood chickens for laying. Civilized!

I have a real soft spot for chickens, too. They're just... I don't know. Homey? There's something about a yard with chickens in it that speaks of a simpler time, I guess. I'm not sure what a yard full of these goofy silkie ones says... "Here lives a free spirit" maybe!

I noticed driving my daughter to school just this morning that a house in our little town, which has no ordinances about chickens one way or another, has suddenly sprouted a flock of mixed bantams in its front yard. So cute! :) Getting chickens is all the rage here now... not that I live in the city of Springfield to be affected by it, but they recently changed to law to allow residents to keep chickens. Civilized, indeed!
