God, speaking of, I can't remember if I told you the horrible dream I had last month about this scene??? I dreamed I was watching this scene except it was ten times more gory than it was in the film (and ergo, somehow, ten times more tragic), and then I woke myself up from the dream because even in the dream there was the same glaring editing mistake (all the shots from A's perspective, Boromir's hand is at his side; all the shot's from B's perspecive, his hand is gripping Aragorn's shoulder), and I woke myself up thinking "EVEN IN MY DREAM THIS IS HAPPENING????? WHAT IS THIS CRAP"
And one wonders, whom did this man love in the past that he could dredge up such emotion for a scene?
Frankly, I cannot think of a better death scene in any of the films I've watched. There have been many, and many I felt sad for, but the tears, the Tears!
I think this is probably the death scene that most moves me in any film, as well. Or at least, of this type of death scene. The prologue of the movie "Up", which chronicles the married life of a man all the way to his wife growing old and dying and leaving him alone, utterly tears me to pieces... I can't even watch it, but that's because it hits far too close to home and causes me to feel actual deep grief.
This scene in LOTR, however, is moving because it pulls on different heartstrings altogether, ones that, for me, don't trigger anything other than sorrow for the characters, a sorrow in which I can vicariously indulge in a more healthy way. If that all makes sense!
It's so incredibly emotional to watch... both actors, as they say, left everything on stage. Masterful. That scene alone should have earned them both Oscars, if Oscar knew anything at all.
