Domino seems to be doing better today. He's begged me twice for treats this morning, so that's a Very Good Sign. And he's not as snurfly-gurgly sounding when he breathes. He's still sneezing a little, but nothing like yesterday.

I discovered a good way to hide pills: tuck them in a bite of hot dog. I went to the store this morning to get liverwurst, but they were out (who knew so many in my little town like liverwurst). I saw some turkey dogs and decided to give them a try, and it worked like a charm. I gave him a bite without a pill first, and he sniffed it suspiciously but relaxed when he discovered nothing was in it. Then I tucked the Benedryl pill in the next bite and he didn't even sniff at it, though he did lick his lips after, with a sort of odd, "Hmm, something wasn't quite right with that bite" look. So I gave him another bite without a pill, and he relaxed again, so the second antibiotic pill went down with no trouble. Then he got the rest of the hot dog in small bites, so Life Is Good.

Cold hot dogs for a puppy dog.

Glad that worked. I had tried grinding the pills into powder and putting them in butter, mayonnaise, just about anything the cats would eat only to be told "We KNOW you put something in there. Ptue!" haha

Happy day with wuppy wants treats. *gives Domino a slurpy kiss on the nose*

You're a brave woman, kissing him on the nose today... you stand a good chance of getting slimed! LOL

Cats (and dogs) are sooooo good at sussing out when you're trying to pull one over on them. Smart little furry goobers. I had a thought about your grinding the pills and putting them in butter--you could then smear the butter all over their front paws. They'd have to lick them clean and thereby ingest the meds. I'll have to remember to try that next time I have to medicate my cats.

*getting slimed*
Ahhh but animal lovers don't mind a little slime now and then. When I stopped to see Lance 2 weeks ago about painting, he had his 2 bull mastif's out and I had to take off the glasses and get down for a good old face slobber. It's fine; soap and water does wonders and frankly, getting a puppy kiss, even if the puppy could knock you down and sit on you, is worth the effort. LOL

Puppy kiss goo: good.
Puppy sneeze slime: er, not exactly in the same category. LOL At least you can't catch this from him.

He's quite the emotive little dog... you can read what he's thinking plain as day, usually. :)

Awww, poor baby. I just love his sad, suspicious little face. I'm glad he seems to be doing better already! It's amazing what a difference finding the right food disguise can make, isn't it? My cat wouldn't eat things, even mixed with tuna... but I discovered that she would do so if I disolved it in apple sauce. With Strider it was always just sticking pills into a spoonful of peanut butter... But I think that works better with bigger dogs who can clean the spoon in a couple of licks, rather than little ones who may take more, mm, delicate tastes. Especially when they're already suspicious of the whole process. *g*

Exactly. Domino very carefully licked all the peanut butter off the spoon... and the pill. *rolls eyes* Thank goodness for hot dogs!

Oh look at that wee face! I'm glad he's improving - and just as glad that the two of you have come to an accommodation about the tablets!

It was a great relief to discover both that he was better, and that I could fool him with hot dogs!

I suspect she adored that hot dog; you were ever so clever. I'm glad to hear that she's feeling better.

The hot dogs really worked well. And he's definitely more himself this afternoon, demanding treats and trotting after me as I do things around the house. (He escorts me from the bedroom to the laundry room--it's one of his Important Jobs.)

Awe. I hope he's getting better soon.
Animals and meds that is something you can write a book about.
A friend of mine had a very very old dog who had to take pills for his heart regularly. Putting them in his food always led to the same result. The food was gone out of the bowl up to the tiniest morsel and in the clean licked bowl only the pills would sit.
Lol

I have no idea how they do it.

Oh goodness, your poor friend. It would be a challenge to give a dog meds daily. I guess I'd have to keep a lot of hot dogs on hand!

He keeps an eye on me all.the.time. This breed (Havanese) was developed to be a companion/lap dog and he takes that Very Seriously (although not usually in my lap; he'd rather squish up next to my side).

I'm glad that you've found a win-win way to give Domino the pill. Heheh, his expression in the pic is priceless!

Do you have any trouble giving your daughter medicines when she was little?

Not too much, no, but then she was an excessively healthy kid (still is) who rarely needed much more than over-the-counter antihistamines for allergies. There was one time the doctor prescribed an antibiotic that tasted terrible (she was only about 3, so it was liquid). I think I ended up mixing it in yogurt. Not the best thing, to mix drugs with dairy, but it was that or never get any down her at all!
