Every time I see Theoden at the Pelennor I have the same thought.

Lead by example, not from the rear.

Then again, different times, different mores but still, a leader leads, not just directs.

Yes, Theoden was just as inspiring, wasn't he.

That's one area where I think the movies have it all over the book--in the book, Aragorn and Gandalf do the directing from a hill, and there's no single-handed charge of the Black Gates like the movies. Makes more sense militarily, keeping the leaders safe, but it's not as stirring!
