Day 9
In your own space, rec at least 3 fanworks you thought you wouldn't like (because they weren't your fandom or they pushed against your boundaries or you thought you just wouldn't be interested) but you ended up loving. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
The first, a story from Fiondil, falls under "not sure I will comprehend" more than "not sure I will like", because I wasn't familiar with this particular character, not having read his earlier stories, and also because of all the Quenya he uses (which is why I haven't read many of his earlier stories). The first time I tried to read his stories, I felt completely lost, but with several re-reads of The Silmarillion under my belt, I felt more confident that I'd keep all those names and phrases straight. I'm glad I did, because this was one of my top reads this past year:
In The High King's Secret Service
by Fiondil
240 years after the last Vanya left Tirion-on-Túna for Vanyamar, High King Ingwë sends a delegation back to the first city of the Eldar to negotiate a trade agreement with the Noldor. Among those in the delegation is a newly made loremaster named Valandur. This is his story.
The second is one I found a long time ago, a parody (sort of). I'm not especially fond of parodies, but this one had me snorting my coffee out my nose:
Ask Elrond
by labradorite
Ask Lord Elrond any and all of your most personal questions! Go on, it’s easy! Just slip your anonymous letter in the box stationed outside of his office and expect a reply within the week. NO tampering with letters. That means YOU, Elladan and Elrohir!
The third is most definitely a parody, which I didn't expect to enjoy as much as I did for the same reason I thought I wouldn't enjoy Ask Elrond. I just don't dig parodies. Happily, I was rib-achingly wrong. There's just so much wonderful fanon-skewering in this one:
The Legolas Story
by Erestor
The touching story of Legolas's traumatic life... no, actually... a touching PARODY of Legolas's traumatic life. There are enough people out there lauding his every move.
