That scene does seem very reflective of the emotions of that day, doesn't it. I think that's one of the reasons I love LOTR so much--Tolkien wrote it with "applicability" in mind, and it does seem that there's something in that story that goes with every situation in life.
Wells I don't know anything about continuity errors but I do know this is the first scene in the film where I actually cried. I don't usually do tears and such so that caught me off guard. :)
