B2MeM fic: To the Heroes of Bree
Mar. 4th, 2012 07:37 pmA hint of things to come in the 3rd Bowen Rushlight story:
B2MeM Challenge:O68, Economy card "War"; Smells card "Pipeweed"; Weather card "Humid"
Format:Drabble
Genre:Gen
Rating:PG
Warnings:Mention of canon character death
Characters:Nob, OC (Bowen Rushlight)
Pairings:None
Summary:A quiet moment between friends.
“Mr. Rushlight, don’t suppose you’ve any pipeweed?” Nob asked. “There’s no Southfarthing anywhere. Maybe it was too humid last summer. Or them refugees from the war down south away used it up.”
Bowen pulled out a small, aromatic packet from his jacket pocket. “Here. Take it.”
“That’s too generous–”
“I said take it!” he said harshly. He blushed. “I’m sorry. It... it was for Mat Heathertoes. His birthday would’ve been next week.”
Nob took it reverently. He blinked rapidly, then whispered, “To Mat, then.”
Bowen gave him a sad smile, then lifted his ale. “To Bree’s heroes, may they ne’er be forgotten.”
~~~
“‘And there was trouble right here in Bree, bad trouble. Why, we had a real set-to, and there were some folk killed, killed dead!’” Barliman Butterbur, ‘Homeward Bound’, The Return of the King.
Date: 2012-03-05 08:26 pm (UTC)I've never read Surgical Steel's stories, but I'm glad she addressed the Breelanders in her universe. They deserve some loving attention. :)
Date: 2012-03-05 09:45 pm (UTC)I love how you center things around Bree. Your stories feel so cozy! And I love Bowen--and the rangers, and how you make them feel like family. Immediate family, I mean ('cause...I know they are family, technically). ;)
Date: 2012-03-05 09:53 pm (UTC)Surgical Steel's stories at Many Paths. although I think the subject of what happened in Bree doesn't really crop up until somewhere about chapter 140-150 or so... I do love her Aragorn - we see him first as Thorongil, but when the heroine gets to Bree he turns up in either 'Have a Real Healer Look at That' or the next chapter - and his relationship with Halbarad et al is really well written.
