Captain America: Civil War tidbit...

This seems like good news:
Captain America: Civil War Reportedly Scoring Well With Test Audiences
Good to know my impending death will be caused by a quality film. :/
Knowing how the comic book Civil War run plays out, and also knowing how the MCU only takes cues from the comics and doesn't necessarily follow the plotline frame by frame, I am by turns excited about this movie and absolutely dreading it. I have no idea where the characters will be by its end, whether dead*, alive, at eternal enmity??? Supposedly, the Russo's have said it contains more humor than CA:TWS, but if the 'third act pulls no punches' bit is true, I'm guessing the humor is mostly front loaded and the end of the movie will wreck everyone completely, regardless of whether they're Team Cap or Team Tony. :/
I'm just hoping I don't ugly cry in a public theater.
Also... VERY spoilery venting VERY COMICS SPOILERY VERY VERY VERY I CANNOT EXPRESS ENOUGH SPOILERY about the comics and my feelings because I need to just vent and tumblr isn't a place where I can vent and feel like anyone actually reads it, still less talkme down from the ledge to me about it.
Okay. So.
In the comics, Cap eventually turns himself in and then is, *gulp*, assassinated. Although it turned out that he wasn't really, most sincerely dead (comics, gotta love 'em, they can't really leave anyone dead), it was still a gut punch. But on the other hand, it did lead to some very good storylines about Bucky taking up the shield and becoming Captain America, and it had a wonderful redemption arc for Bucky as he came to grips with all he'd been forced to do as Winter Soldier and reluctantly accept that it wasn't entirely his fault (one would and should argue that none of it was his fault, as he was brainwashed, but being a man of honor, he didn't see it that way and strove to make amends, as you'd expect a truly good man to do. Side note: if you think comics Steve is angsty, he learned it from comics Bucky. Good golly, that man angstses. Angsts? Agonizes? Whatever. His adorable yet mopey internal dialogue with himself is the stuff of legend).
The MCU of course has been dropping hints in every Cap film that it could go that direction, so many hints that Sebastian Stan has joked, when asked if he wants to become Captain, that the directors sure do dangle the shield in front of him all the time. "Like a piece of cheese," he's said.
And he's not wrong:
Captain America: The First Avenger, right before he's blasted out of the train...

And in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, a pose lifted nearly straight from the comic books...

Sebs has gone from his former, "I don't know anything, I just answer the phone and show up where they need me" to a more assertive "Hell yeah, I want to be Captain" stance, including friendly bickering with Anthony Mackie about whether he or Falcon will become Cap first. Not sure it's just Sebs gaining confidence in his own place in the MCU to start participating in what his fans are clamoring for (just as he's starting to do some low-keyokay not really all that low-key lobbying for BuckyNat) or just wishfully thinking aloud after reading the comics. Maybe a little of both.
Another tidbit: Sebs originally auditioned for the Steve Rogers role, but they decided he had that dark edge that screamed "Bucky" and eventually "Winter Soldier", though at that time, they didn't know if the movies would take off and they'd be able to take his storyline there. In fact, there's a joke in the fandom that when Sebs showed up to audition for Steve Rogers, they asked him about Bucky Barnes and he replied, "Who the hell is Bucky?" To which they said, "Perfect!" Probably not true, but it's funny. *g* And it'll be interesting if he *does* become Cap to see him actually be the super hero he auditioned for, before he knew Bucky does indeed become Captain America.
So... Bucky as Cap? Some fans who are really good at Photoshop are already going there:

(The first two show variations on his actual comic book Cap uniform, which has black pants and side panels on the torso. I read somewhere that Bucky wanted black on the uniform to show his remorse over his dark past, that he's not really worthy to be a pure Captain America, though I don't know if that's canon or just someone's headcanon. It has become *my* headcanon, whatever its source. That uniform could also neatly reflect what the Russo's have said recently about Bucky: he's no longer Bucky and no longer the Winter Soldier, but something in between. As Captain America, Bucky wasn't the Winter Soldier and wasn't 100% Captain America, but something in between. Interesting parallel.)
Given all that, it's plausible we'll see Cap at least *seem* to die in CA:CW. Much as I want to see Bucky as Cap if he'll look like those photos (hnnngg!!!), I AM NOT READY. *sigh* I love Chris Evans as Cap as much as I loved Christopher Reeve as Superman. He is and always will be Steve Rogers to me in the same way that Christopher Reeve was and, with apologies to Henry Cavill, always will be Superman (and what is it with actors named Chris and superheroes??? I swear if Dink ever has a son, I'm going to insist she name him Christopher).
What I really want: An entire movie of Steve & Bucky doing hero things together and going to breakfast diners for pancakes* and pranking each other in the Avengers facility and just being together as brothers-in-spirit again. I'm sure that's not an option except in my fanfic. THANK GOD FOR FANFIC.
All is not dread and doom, though. There are also comic book lines that give me hope that Cap won't die, simply because eventually he's back to life and Bucky decides to return the shield and the uniform and go on to be Good Guy Winter Soldier. Given the way the MCU cherry picks plot elements from the comics, the films may skip the Bucky Cap arc and go straight to Good Guy Winter Soldier, leaving the shield with Steve Rogers. (Or they may kill him, skip over Bucky and give Falcon the shield, which is a possibility as well, but Steve didn't exactly die for Sam to become Falcon in the comics, so I'm going to leave discussing those ramifications for another time.)
Another hopeful bit: Chris Evans is wildly popular as Steve Rogers. Men, women, children, dogs, cats and all life forms down to the molecular level all seem to love him as Steve Rogers. Steve Rogers in his hands has become a beloved cinematic force and not one that I would think Marvel will toss away lightly. They consider themselves to have struck pure gold with Chris Evans. He still has a couple movies left in his contract, and we've seen from RDJ that contracts can and are extended. Chris Evans has also flip-flopped on his previous 'ready to move on' stance that he briefly displayed and he's fully at ease now with playing Steve Rogers and loves the character, where initially he will filled with anxiety about whether he could do the character justice. Extensions aside, even if he does die, he'll be backfrom the grave?? for Avengers: Infinity Wars. Steve Rogers is, after all, in the foreground or background of nearly all the Marvel comics that deal with the Avengers. He's a central pillar for Marvel just as Superman and Batman are for DC.
But in the meantime... ughhhhhhhhhhhhhh. It might be very painful. :(((((
__________
*It could well be that in the Thunderbolts comic line coming out this summer, where Bucky guides a team of former super-villains who want to make amends, that Cap & Bucky do a little of that. Marvel released a shot of one frame that has them sitting together in a restaurant booth and Bucky's jabbing his fork in the air toward Steve, and it *might* have pancakes on it. Or a piece of sausage. Too soon to tell.
