PSA for those who post to ff.net

There's apparently several spamdex accounts mirroring ff.net and thereby copying everyone's stories onto their sites with their advertisers, etc etc.

Here's a link to the post about it on [livejournal.com profile] mrowe's tumblr:

http://letsnaththings.tumblr.com/post/138977649992/all-fanfictionnet-stories-have-been-stolen

I found my stories on all the mirror sites and duly reported them and also emailed ff.net with the links, which has probably been done 10,000 times by others but just in case they didn't know about it. :/

So aggravating.

You're welcome!

I'm just glad it's only a few of my oldest stories, but reports filed. And hopefully ffnet will fix their server/database...

I'm an eternal noob, to swipe your phrase, at the technical side of internetzing and databases and codes (seriously, I haven't upgraded my knowledge since 1998 levels), but it just floors me that while I'm not allowed to do a simple right click copy/paste on ff.net so I can quote a line in my review, someone else can go in and lift the entire thing and put it on their server like it's their own.

So true! :(

Thanks for the info! My stuff is all sure enough there.

If you don't mind, I'm going to pass this on to a couple of email groups.

Please do! Everyone needs to know.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2016-02-09 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I've passed this to S2C as he posts there - thank you. (I don't - just never got around to it...)

No problem!

I see myself on these, too. I hate hackers!

They're the worst.

S2C says thanks - he has reported his, too. He also says the first site on the list has already 'gone' - no fic any more but links to investment sites and so on - so all the protests & reports seem to be working.

[identity profile] cairistiona7.livejournal.com 2016-02-09 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Very good. Let's hope those sites get removed completely.

[identity profile] mikononyte.livejournal.com 2016-02-09 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
thanks for the report and links. I did the google thing, but good grief! it's been decade or more since I did a report to fanfiction.net and no idea where to start (it's changed drastically!)

any idea where to go to report this to ff.net? thanks in advance. (would dearly love to find these dexie basturds and render them into garden mulch)

[identity profile] cairistiona7.livejournal.com 2016-02-09 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I had to dig for it! They don't make it easy, but I went to the "help" page and found the email address for support:

https://www.fanfiction.net/support/

The addy is support@fanfiction.com (And yes, that's .com and not .net) I didn't put any of their pre-formatted categories in the subject header because none really fit the situation, so hopefully it doesn't get kicked to a spam folder somewhere. (How ironic would THAT be.)

[identity profile] mikononyte.livejournal.com 2016-02-10 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
Ah! thank you!

Yeah being spamboxed would suck. I think they'll get tonnes of emails at this rate. Hopefully they'll act on it. I'm seriously considering deleting my pieces and putting them on Ao3 but leaving a warning and forward to new home on my biography, but oh man it's so much work! I've got 2 or 3 pieces in the 150000 word size and dread the chapter entries. LOL

[identity profile] cairistiona7.livejournal.com 2016-02-10 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That would definitely be a lot of working, moving them. I'm curious, why would you delete them from ff.net? Lack of traffic? Trolling? I know for me, I tend to get far more hits etc on ff.net than Ao3, and I do like to support ff.net as it's still very much a 'gateway' into fandoms for new people. It has it's drawbacks but I've found some wonderful folks to follow and chat with over the years there.

[identity profile] mikononyte.livejournal.com 2016-02-10 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I would move them because:

1. they were stolen hand's down by people to make money and FF.net allowed it (again)

2. I have been plagarized at ff.net not once but twice by the same person. It took time, energy and a lot of stress to fix and I don't need it.

and

3. There is little to no traffic - which does not bother me - but I have some that I'd like to put up but could just as easily put a link and list as "adult" at Ao3 which would get zero traffic at ff.net. (not porn, just adult themes)

[identity profile] elwenlj.livejournal.com 2016-02-09 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. It's difficult to trace by author on any of those sites but I found my Bell's Table on them all.

Thanks for the "heads up".

[identity profile] cairistiona7.livejournal.com 2016-02-09 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't look *too* deeply into the sites, like whether you could see reviews or leave reviews, etc... I suppose you probably could but then you'd need to sign up at the mirror sites and who knows WHAT that might get you into. Yikes.

Hopefully those sites will get taken down. Despicable. :P

Comments coming down from Lotr community on yahoo is viruses in their pages. So be warned!

Why am I not surprised. *sigh*
