Months back, when I was rather deep in the throes of dealing with my father's final days and the aftermath, [livejournal.com profile] tanis2014 gifted me with the final version of her lovely podfic, complete with sound effects and music, of my B2MeM story, Bear It Still For Me A While. The story is near and dear to my heart because it touches on all those themes of deep friendship that I love exploring in stories about Aragorn and Halbarad, and even though it hasn't gotten the hits and reviews some of my other stories have, it's one that's high on the list of my own personal favorite. That she chose to create a podfic for it is a gift I will always treasure.

You can download or listen online to the podcast here, and read along with the story here at ff.net or here at SoA. Or stay here on this post for some visuals, including the photo of quiet, pastoral hills that inspired the piece...

Many, many thanks to Tanis for the wonderful gift, and my apologies for not giving it a signal boost much, much sooner!

[livejournal.com profile] lilybaggins needed an Aragorn-h/c brain recharge so I dashed this off in a comment at her LJ. Then I thought some of you might like to read it. So... here it is. Written this morning before I finished my cuppa coffee so... yeah, it's definitely a "for whatever it's worth" fic. LOL

Untitled Feverish!Aragorn ficlet
Word count: I dunno
Rating: I dunno... G, I guess, as there's nothing more disturbing than Aragorn whining.
Genre: that I do know... h/c
Pairing: only brotherly lurves from Halbarad

He couldn't get warm. He shivered and shook and felt a hand on his forehead. He pried open his eyes and squinted, little good it did in the dim light. But he knew the hand on his forehead, knew that there was no one else around for leagues. "Halbarad, keep your distance lest you catch this. I'll be..." He wanted to say 'well soon,' but a spate of harsh coughs interrupted him.

He heard a snort come from the blurry figure leaning over his makeshift pallet on the dirt floor, then a chiding tone, "Oh, certainly, I'll just leave the Heir of Isildur to die in this wretched abandoned cabin. No one would hang me for dereliction of duty, I'm sure."

Aragorn worked up a weak smile. "It's just that you can't get sick. You get too cranky. I can't cope with that right now."

"I won't get sick, nor will I get cranky even if I do." He ignored Aragorn's disbelieving squawk. "You know, you're not the only hardy one in the family. I daresay, at least at the moment, you aren't nearly as hardy as I am."

"You never get sick. It's not fair."

"Now, there's fever talk if I ever heard it. Who was it retching alongside the road at every step last fall, hmm? And who is it that catches every sniffle my children come down with?"

"Exactly my point. Leave me be."

Halbarad grunted a vague protest as he slipped his hand behind Aragorn's neck. "Hush your whinging," he ordered as he gently lifted Aragorn's head. "I've tea with willow bark plus so much valerian root that you'll sleep until Midsummer. Drink."

"You found valeri--" More coughs.

"Aye, a small clump of it and plenty of other medicinal herbs growing wild in the back of this cabin. Probably all that's left of some leech's herb patch. Now quit talking and drink."

Halbarad pushed the cup firmly against his lips and Aragorn had little choice but to drink or be doused. He drank the terrible stuff and only then did Halbarad lower his head.

"Now be still and let yourself sleep."

It seemed such sensible advice that Aragorn didn't argue. He shut his eyes, and after a while, the cold in his bones warmed and the small noises of the fire and of Halbarad shifting as he sat watch faded away into the dark comfort of quiet dreams.

I had plans this morning to do all kinds of things, none of which included spending 45 minutes creating Halbarad on azaleasdolls.com.

[livejournal.com profile] suzll, I blame you entirely, because I'd never heard of that site until I read your post. Now I'm all full of Halbarad feels, when I need to be full of Bowen feels.

I wonder if there's a "create a Bree-land farmer" tab...

Hmm, maybe...? )

This has been unveiled over at B2MeM, so here it is re-posted here as well. :)

Title: Bear It Still For Me A While
Author Name: cairistiona
Prompt: Spring Landscape (photo here)
Summary: The Standard-bearer’s thoughts turn homeward as he travels to war.
Rating: PG
Warnings: Themes of war, prophecy and death (much like Tolkien’s entire legendarium), though this is not a deathfic. Tissue alert.
Beta: Many thanks to my Betas Four: Inzilbeth, Suzll, Everleigh and Estelcontar
Author's Notes:  All characters and Arda itself belong to the good Professor. I only take them out to play. Denlad, Eledh, and Galadh are my OC Rangers who often appear in my stories. Title taken from the passage:
“And Aragorn said to Halbarad, ‘What is that that you bear, kinsman?’ For he saw that instead of a spear he bore a tall staff, as it were a standard, but it was close-furled in a black cloth bound about with many thongs.” The Passing of the Grey Company, The Return of the King, JRR Tolkien.

I did a wee bit of research for [livejournal.com profile] suzll this afternoon, to help her win a bet (Elros and Elrond *are* twins in canon, per an obscure line in The War of the Jewels' "Tale of Years"). So when she said she was going to collect her winnings, I whined for a cut, since I, like, took five minutes to look something up and could have suffered a paper cut. Or something equally dire and debilitating. Plus, I was afraid my hill was about to burn down* ... so she wrote me a terrific Ranger drabble.

Read it here. :D

Thank you, my friend!

*There was a brushfire on the other side of our hill this afternoon. Lots of smoke, but there were a couple of firefighters keeping watch on our side of the hill while a few additional firefighters got their brush buggy up into the woods. They seem to have contained it to that side of the hill, so crisis averted, yay. \o/ It's still kind of smoky outside, though. *cough*

[livejournal.com profile] suzll just gifted me with the sweetest young Halbarad and wee!Aragorn ficlet!

Influence
At age nine, Halbarad is already getting his younger cousin Aragorn into mischief.

Read and enjoy!

The things you discover while eating lunch. I was watching the season premiere of Hell on Wheels, which I had on the DVR, and a shot of Anson Mount stopped me mid-chew and forced me to pause the playback, sit and drool reflect, and then grab my camera and take a pic of my TV screen.

Cousins, most definitely... )

I'm always on the lookout for Ranger-y looking actors, to help me firm up what Halbarad might look like. In cairistionaverse, he looks enough like Aragorn to pass as a brother (or at least, that's what Bowen Rushlight thinks).  I've found a few actors that *could* be him but none have ever really felt "wow, THIS is Halbarad!"  Until I came across this guy, while watching AMC's Hell on Wheels (which is a western, but I cropped out the hat. *g*).  If he's not my "wow" guy, he comes very, very, extremely close.

B2MeM Challenge: G51, Injury & Other Illnesses, "Torture" (which I took in the figurative sense rather than literal, though Halbarad might argue otherwise... and apologies to Lily Baggins who I know was stumping for a very literal torture fic!  I may write one just for you when B2MeM is over, my dear...)
Format: Ficlet/Vignette

Warnings:  None
Characters: Aragorn, Halbarad, OCs
Pairings: None
Summary: After nearly losing his chieftain, Halbarad calms down and takes a deep breath.  Inspired in large part by the comments left for part 1, which got me thinking that I needed to carry the scene a wee bit further.  Thank you all!

Concentration

A drabbling bit of silliness inspired by [livejournal.com profile] rs9's observations on Aragorn as portrayed by Viggo and a certain set to his chin.  I wrote this in about 10 minutes so, yeah... take it for what it's worth. *g*
Rated G
Halbarad and Denlad discuss one of the odd quirks of their beloved Chieftain.
