Might as well post a link here to my once-yearly attempt at writing romance:

Red Winter Hymnal
Sometimes missions don't go as planned, but the law of unintended consequences doesn't mean all outcomes are bad. Written for Night2ingale (msnightraven on tumblr) for the tumblr BuckyNat Secret Santa for their prompt, "Natasha gets injured badly." because I am a sucker for the whole "injuries lead to declarations of love" trope.

Bucky Barnes/Natasha Romanoff
Rated T/PG-13/no smut, just feels and h/c
AU for comics because I didn't use Brubaker's mindwipe plot because I don't like Brubaker's mindwipe plot (although that's the only thing I didn't like about Brubaker's comic run); probably AU for the MCU simply because BuckyNat hasn't happened in the MCU except in Sebastian Stan's fondest daydreams yet.

IT'S FINISHED. Wow. Been a while since I could say I've finished a multi-chapter fic.

Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] mrowe, [livejournal.com profile] nefhiriel, and [livejournal.com profile] imbecamiel for the incredibly helpful beta'ing!

Mr. Fix It
On the run for nearly a year after leaving Steve Rogers on the banks of the Potomac, Bucky's found a quiet hiding place in a city far from there, where he can work on becoming an actual human being again. Update: Now that I've seen CA:CW, this is mostly AU, but will be tied in to movie canon where possible. Complete.

Rated T for language

I haven't posted each update notice here because I figure anyone here who's interested probably has already subscribed to my stories either on Ao3 or ff.net.  But in case not, Mr. Fix It is up to five chapters now.

Captain America: Civil War will (FINALLY) open in the US this weekend, and I'm very curious how it may affect the direction of my story. Some of my Bucky Barnes gapfilling seem to be uncannily matching up with things that I later hear Sebastian Stan say about about Bucky's state of mind and what he's been up to since CA:TWS, but other things look to be completely AU.

Speaking of what he says about the character, Sebastian has a lovely habit of leaving nuggets of meta gold on fans' IG posts....Character meta straight from Sebastion Stan... )

(I can hear y;all sigh with relief, don't think I can't....)

I posted another chapter on Mr. Fix It, if any of you here are reading that one (usual places, Ao3 & ff.net) and got a review yesterday that, despite its brevity, makes me smile:

"Holy poo you're an amazing writer."

That was it. That was the review. XD Much as I love the detailed ones, sometimes the short ones are just as gratifying. I think I'll whisper this one to myself in times of doubt.

Now for some writerly blather about Captain America fic and my own methods and how writing these characters is screwing up my method pretty thoroughly. Read on only if you're interested in reading how another writer agonizes over All The Things...

For the rest of you who skipped all that navel-gazing, here's one of the cutest pics of Sebastian Stan to come out of the big CA:CW press tour....

Such a cute little ray of sunshine, that man.

The muse bit hard, so Mr. Fix It is now going to be a multi-chapter fic.

Rating: T
Gen
Pairings: none

On the run for nearly a year after leaving Steve Rogers on the banks of the Potomac, Bucky's found a quiet hiding place in a city far from there, where he can work on becoming an actual human being again. No longer a one-shot! The muse ambushed me harder than t'Challa did Bucky. More chapters forthcoming.

Since the movie is about to come out, I'm doing a quick re-read of The Martian, this time skimming the super-math-y science equations (which are fascinating but me and math, ugh). Enjoying it immensely, but what I really wanted to mention is that I saw some of an Andy Weir reddit discussion (he does a lot of reddits) and he has stated he hearily approves of fanfiction (wish I could find the exact quote but I originally saw it on tumblr, and between tumblr and reddit, I don't know which site is less conducive to backtracking to find a specific post). He's written some fanfiction himself, for Ready Player One, a YA novel by Ernest Cline (that's been sitting on my TBR pile for a while now... looks very fun) and a few other works including Sherlock Holmes. A quick google gave me this list.

Nice to see authors embracing fanfiction, even after they've achieved hard-earned success with their own original fiction. ESPECIALLY after they achieve success with their original fiction.

Included in this review of Do Not Go Gentle are instructions on how to properly use an oven and a list of this reader's favorite baked goods:

"X-D This was the best thing ever. Yes, you have a fan. Please write more! X-D I love Mr. Kelly! And tell Steve he should be okay as long as he bakes it at 375 for an hour and thirty minutes, 350 if his oven is a convection one. But if it's a new, energy-conserving convection oven, set it at 375 with convection on or it will never get done (I still haven't figured out our new oven. The one I'm used to was from the eighties. But then the eighties called and demanded their oven back, leaving me stuck with an Energy Star monstrosity that I can not understand at all.) Or use the roasts setting. He could do that...
I also love oatmeal raisin cookies, snickerdoodles, gingerbread, and peanut butter cookies when they're hot. ;-P"

Oh Marvel fandom, you're so adorable.
cairistiona: (Winter Soldier)
Tissue alert for this one (if I've done my job right...)  Steve & Bucky are brothers, not lovers, as usual.

Not Fit For Duty
To help an old friend sounds like a good plan, but this is Bucky Barnes. Best laid plans oft go awry, and absolutely nothing is ever easy for him. Follow-up to "Orders Acknowledged". A one-shot for now, possibly more to come, so not listing it as complete. Rating for language and mention of non-consensual torture-no details but still. Better safe than sorry.

All these wonderful characters belong to Marvel.

I have some vague ideas of things I want to write about in additional stories following this, but nothing is coalescing into a real story yet. So this is a one-shot with the potential to grow into something more.

Thank you again, [livejournal.com profile] mrowe, for the excellent beta feedback! It's expanded a bit from the version you saw--Bucky got a few more memories back. *g*

Just Being A Good Neighbor

In which Steve Rogers battles monsters, screaming cyborgs, and a neighbor who thinks Steve’s the garbage collector. #2 in the Apartment #4 series. Humor, a wee bit of hurt/comfort and bonus Clint Barton cameo and a mention of before-we-knew-he-was-HYDRA Rumlow acting as a human crutch. One-shot. And many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] imbecamiel and [livejournal.com profile] nefhiriel for the beta!

Rated PG/M for mild swearing and very mild sexual innuendo. VERY mild. SO MILD.

I polished up and titled that angsteh Bucky Barnes one-shot I wrote the other day (in other words, new and improved with more angst and more insight into Bucky's thoughts):

Orders Acknowledged
When he hears about Agent Carter's passing, he knows he has to come back.
Angst & friendship.
Rated K+
No pairings.

Read at ff.net or Ao3.

(Dang, I wish I had an illustration to stick here. I really need to get back to figuring out how to sketch...)
cairistiona: (Cap)
All righty then, for those of you who only read fic on Ao3, I figured out (again) how to post there, and it's now up as the first installment of my "Apartment #4" series (and hopefully not the only installment).

Do Not Go Gentle

A winter storm, a horrible blanket and cinnamon rolls. Just another winter afternoon in Steve Rogers' Dupont Circle apartment building. Fluff, mostly, with some angst and Bucky memories thrown in, because this is Steve Rogers, after all.

I rated it "M" over at ff.net but T at Ao3, mostly because of the way the two websites define their ratings. There's only a little bit of very mild (to my mind) sexual innuendo. Nothing graphic, nothing detailed. No blood, either. Not even a papercut. A sink nearly bought it, though, so there's that. Avoid if risk to kitchen fixtures is a trigger.

(And yes, I'm being horrible and snarky and facetious, because I have, in general, an aversion to putting usually spoilerish warnings on fics. To paraphrase what [livejournal.com profile] curiouswombat said once, it's a story. Things happen. Be warned.)
cairistiona: (Cap)
Don't be shocked, but I haz a new fic:

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] imbecamiel and [livejournal.com profile] nefhiriel for beta'ing/bouncing ideas/putting up with my whining as I wrote this. And thank you, [livejournal.com profile] mrowe & [livejournal.com profile] suzll for putting up with the occasional delays in my beta'ing your stories while I finished it up and didn't want to pull my head out of Washington DC and back to Middle-earth. :)

And boy, is it taking ff.net forever to list the thing on the main Captain America page (or even the "Just In" page Edit: it finally showed up so yay). I haven't posted in over a year, so... is that normal these days? Or is ff.net giving me the razz because I don't post much? (Hey, ff.net, I *do* leave reviews!!!)  Seems like it used to show up within about 10-15 minutes. Now it's been... *looks at clock*... almost six hours. Meh. I did get an email notification for it, at least. Not the most helpful, though, because I have a feeling most of my followers over there look for LOTR fic, not Cap fic. Which... I do intend to return to.

Anyway, I'll also post this one to Ao3, but I want it to be part of a series, and I have to figure out what to call the series. And then try to remember how to actually post stories over there. :P

Happy reading!

(And lookee... new Cap icon. Finally.)

Months back, when I was rather deep in the throes of dealing with my father's final days and the aftermath, [livejournal.com profile] tanis2014 gifted me with the final version of her lovely podfic, complete with sound effects and music, of my B2MeM story, Bear It Still For Me A While. The story is near and dear to my heart because it touches on all those themes of deep friendship that I love exploring in stories about Aragorn and Halbarad, and even though it hasn't gotten the hits and reviews some of my other stories have, it's one that's high on the list of my own personal favorite. That she chose to create a podfic for it is a gift I will always treasure.

You can download or listen online to the podcast here, and read along with the story here at ff.net or here at SoA. Or stay here on this post for some visuals, including the photo of quiet, pastoral hills that inspired the piece...

This site nabbed at least one of my stories; I logged a complaint so hopefully it won't happen again. This person does at least seem willing to take down stories when asked. And now to go change my tags. *sigh*

Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] dreamflower02 at Warning: someone is fishing in LJ waters...
I got this warning through [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants. Apparently a website has cropped up that is trawling through LJ, looking for anything tagged fanfic, and then reposting it WITHOUT PERMISSION.

Here is a link: http://www.donotlink.com/framed?561309

The link diverts you from the original. It takes you to a separate page that will not show up on search engines, in order to defeat the thief's purpose of attracting search engines. (The site is full of advertising.) But as you can see, a lot of people have been complaining.

I don't know if any of my friends may have been victimized, but there's a Complaint Page, which you can go to and make him take your stuff down.

I don't have time right now to see if he's lifted any of my stories, but I will be checking as soon as I can.

(And I'm using my fanfic tag so if he steals this entry he won't be getting any real fanfic, LOL!)

I promised [livejournal.com profile] lilybaggins an Aragorn h/c birthday fic, and here it is.  Happy reeeeally belated birthday, my friend!

The Day the Stranger Came
Rated: PG for some mild adult humor and medical/injury stuffs (there be blood...)
Middle-earth and all its environs and inhabitants belong to Tolkien; thank you, good Sir, for creating such a lavish playground!
Unbeta'd, so if there's any issues, let me know!

And yes, I typed all those names without having to look them up! *g*

But the point that isn't to pat myself on the back that I finally memorized all their names, but to ask if anyone knows of some good gen/het dwarf fic, either movie- or book-verse. Now that RL is calming down and I have more time for fanfic, I'd like to read some TH-based dwarf fics, but it seems like 98% of what's out there is slash, which isn't my cuppa.

If any of you know of a comm or archive that has some good gen/het dwarf fic, please let me know!
