Day 10

In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (More than one is okay, too.) Tell us about it, tell us why you love it, give us some examples and recs. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

It's no secret to anyone who's known me long or has read my fic that I love hurt/comfort. I don't like it when the hurt is emphasized more than the comfort, though I don't cringe at detail, but I love fics that allow equal or more time for the injured character to get help, heal and get better (I call those h/cccccc). Books and movies/tv shows usually don't take the time to really delve in to the 'comfort' phase: the character gets hurt, then boom! flash forward to he's all better and back at it. Even as a kid, I found that immensely unsatisfying. I didn't want to prolong his agony (and I don't like fics that 'pile on' and have one complication after another after another), but I wanted to see the poor guy get all the TLC he needed to get better. Fanfiction gives us that opportunity to really take the time to detail recovery. The best fanfics use that time not only for recovery but to show how the injury/illness changes a character and also weaves in plot advancement, but I can also enjoy diving into an PWP h/ccccc fic just to see a character get some loving that he usually doesn't get in his day-to-day life, especially with Bucky Barnes, because his life has been one long drawn-out hurt session with hardly any comfort at all. Also? I want realism, where possible. I don't really like the ones where the protag has a broken leg, is gut shot, spent sixteen hours completely unconscious... and then is fine in three days (unless he's Steve Rogers, but even then I want the poor man to have time to do his speed healing thing). High marks as well if a story goes into some accurate EMS/medical treatment.

Recs, for Bucky Barnes h/ccccc:

I always fall back to Jee oto ta Huttuk Koga's The Third Directive and Simple Conversation when I need a good h/c recovering!Bucky fic(s). They were written before Age of Ultron or CACW came out, so they're of the "recovering at Avengers Tower" sub-genre that was so fun to read (and still is, as AU). I like these two connected stories in particular because they show the trauma Bucky suffered, but by the end, he's recovered. And all the time in between it's a nice balance of him doing what he can for himself and getting aid and comfort from Steve and the rest of the Avengers.

I also enjoy LOTR Aragorn h/cccc. One of my all-time favorites in that genre is Canafinwe's Pale Faced Tark. It's a 2-chapter tale that covers a LOT of h/ccccc ground for all that it's so short.
